I have been receiving a lot of questions about how I clean my interior brick floors. So I thought I would write a short post with some tips. The nice thing about brick floors is they are pretty low maintenance. Which is good for me because I don’t really like cleaning floors. I’ll be honest I haven’t done much to clean my brick floors besides sweep and spot clean them when needed. Don’t judge me! Mostly because I wasn’t sure how to clean them either. So after trying a few things here is what I have found works for me.
Light Cleaning
- Sweeping often is a must because dirt can stain the grout and also wear down the sealer.
- For mopping, I use a regular old yarn twist mop. I also like to keep a toothbrush handy for scrubbing those grout areas that need a little extra attention. (Like around the toilet) For the cleaning solution, I mix 1 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water. I love to clean with vinegar because it works as a natural disinfectant and deodorizer. I pretty much use vinegar or baking soda to clean everything in my house.
- Some alternatives to Vinegar:
- Baking Soda: 1 – 2 tablespoons mixed with a gallon of water
- Natural stone and tile cleaner
- Some alternatives to Vinegar:
- After I am done mopping I take a dry rag and wipe up any water that may have pooled in the shallow spots of the grout and bricks.
Deep Cleaning
- Stained Grout: Dissolve 2 tablespoons of OxiClean in 2 cups of warm water. Use a toothbrush to scrub the stained grout using a circular motion. I like to let it sit for about 20 minutes and then I mop the floors as usual.
- Oil Stains: If the oil recently spilled, blot the spill with clean rags as quickly as possible. Try not to spread it around by rubbing it. If the stain is older, dump some kitty litter on top of the stain so that it covers it entirely. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and then vacuum. Repeat the process if there is still a stain.
- Make sure to reseal your brick floors once a year.

Are you still happy with your choice of sealer? What made you choose that particular one??
Yes, I am glad I went with that sealer. I chose it because I didn’t want the sealer to add any shine to the bricks.
What was the name of the sealer you used? I see you mentioned it did not have a shine.
Aldon Same Day Sealer
Is it hard on your feet? How is it if you walk bare foot? Wanting to do kitchen, worried about standing ,rough on bare little feet etc.
Thanks
I have brick flooring and it is difficult to stand on with bare feet. It makes our legs ache and our feet feel wonky!
Nice article you have thanks for sharing this informative content.
I think it’s great that you mentioned how sweeping your brick flooring regularly can help you prevent dirt from accumulating and causing the sealer to deteriorate. My brother is thinking about opening a business that distributes frozen foods to local grocery stores, but he needs to find some durable flooring that is easy to care for in order to minimize contamination. He should find someone that can help him maintain his flooring once he finds something that suits his needs.
